desktop, a small image representing a dormant application
or program group that can be brought to life by
double-clicking. 2. In a Web page, a small image that may
or may not be a hyperlink to some other resource.
- IMAP - (Internet
Message Access Protocol) A method of accessing e-mail or
bulletin board messages that are kept on a mail server.
IMAP permits a "client" e-mail program to
access remote messages as if they were on a the users
local machine. E-mail stored on an IMAP server can be
manipulated from a desktop computer at home, a
workstation at the office, and a notebook computer while
travelling, without the need to transfer messages or
files back and forth between these computers, as is
usually the case with the POP style mail access protocol.

superhighway (infobahn) - A buzzword probably
coined by Vice-President Al Gore. Actually means the
internet.
- inline image -On
a web page, an image to be loaded along with the page
text.
- interlaced GIF - This
is a special format of GIF files (invented by Compuserv
who also invented GIF format) that allows for the
possibility of storing and displaying the lines in an
image non-sequentially. When an image is interlaced GIF,
the user gets to see the overall image earlier before the
entire image is loaded.
- internet -A
network of computer networks stretching across the
world,linking computers of many different types. No one
organization has control of the Internet or jurisdiction
over it.

- Browser from Microsoft.
- internet
service provider - A company that provides
access to the Internet. Before you can connect to the
Internet you must first establish an account with an
Internet Service Provider (ISP).
- InterNIC - Internet
Information Center. A repository of information about the
Internet. It is divided into two parts: 1) directory
services, run by AT&T in New Jersey, and 2)
registration services, run by Network Solutions in
Virginia. It is funded partially by the National Science
Foundation and partially by fees that are charged to
register Internet domains.An organization responsible for
registering internet domains.
- IP address -An
Internet machine address formatted with numbers rather
than a host name. An IP address may contain a port
number, seperated from the host address by a colon.
- ISAPI - (Internet
Server Application Program Interface) This is an
application programming interface, created by Process
Software and Microsoft, which is tailored to Internet
servers. ISAPI uses Windows' dynamic link libraries
(DLLs) to make processes faster than under regular APIs.
- ISDN -(Integrated
Services Digital Network) Local telephone switching
system that allows a single phone line to carry several
high-speed data circuits as well as a voice line on a
high-speed timeshare basis.
