- gamma -In the RGB
color system used for computer monitors, all variations
in intensity of the primary colors are brought about by
variations in electric voltage. The relationship between
voltage and the degree of perceived color on the monitor
(luminance) is non-linear, and is exponent of the
arithmetical equation that relates them. Gamma correction
is, strictly speaking, an electronic manipulation that
restores linearity between color assigned to a pixel and
actual pixel luminance. It is more commonly used to refer
to the process used in the computer graphics to correct
for mismatch between the orignal and the electronic
version.
- gateway - A
computer system and its associated software that permit
two networks using different protocols to communicate
with each other.
- GIF -(Graphics
Interchange Format) One of many formats for computer
images, designed to be highly transportable between
computer systems. Ideal for line art, and very frequently
used for in-line images in web pages.
- gopher -An Internet
search-and-display application that reduces all internet
resource "trees" to onscreen menus.
- grayed -Most
windows applications have an extensive choice of toolbar
buttons and menu options. However, not all of these
options may be actually available at any given moment.
(The "paste" option is not available when
nothing is on the clipboard, for example.) Rather than
eliminate these options altogether, software designers
arrange to display them in a pale color rather than sharp
and contrasted. They are then said to be grayed out.
- GUI - Graphical User
Interface - this term refers to a software front-end
meant to provide an attractive and easy to use interface
between a computer user and an application.
